LIVE LINK: Policy Briefing on Tax Reform

Business and Policy Briefing

May 21, 8:30 AM

The Pittsburgh Chapter of the NTMA is working in partnership with the Coalition for a Prosperous America and other concerned groups to sponsor a special briefing TOMORROW MORNING on tax reform to foster U.S. trade competitiveness and manufacturing growth.  As a member, you’ll have the opportunity to view this event LIVE from your home or office– as if you were in D.C. at the National Press Club.

American manufacturers are double taxed when selling overseas. Foreign countries have reduced tariffs but replaced them with consumption taxes on imports.  German, Chinese, and other countries’ manufacturers receive generous consumption tax rebates when exporting.  As a result of these tax subsidies, American companies are often priced out of export markets. Thus far, government officials have refused congressional directives to solve this problem in trade negotiations.

  • Dr. Peter Morici, Robert H. Smith School of Business, Univ. of Maryland, will discuss the competitive advantages of tax reform that include offsetting income taxes with consumption taxes.
  • Burl Finkelstein, Kason Industries, will relate the challenges his company faces when competitors receive tax rebates upon export.
  • Michael DiRoma, QGA Public Affairs, will discuss the experiences of Canada, Australia and India in  implementing consumption taxes
